Brushes

I have used many different brushes from cheap Amazon sables and synthetics, Winsor & Newton Series 7, Raphael 8404, Army Painter, Rosemary and Co, just to name a few. My current go-to brushes are the following:

Monument Hobbies – Pro Sables

These are Monument Hobbies Kolinsky sable brushes and are great brushes at a cheaper price point than many other Kolinsky sables. They come in a variety of sizes to suit all your painting needs. If you’re more of a synthetics kind of hobbyist then they have brushes for you too! Check the links below to save a little bit on your Monument Hobbies order and support WUB.

Kimera Models – Arrowhead Sables

These are the most versatile brushes I have ever used, and the price definitely reflects their awesomeness. The quality of these brushes is fantastic. They are comfortable in hand for longer painting sessions, they have a large belly and an insanely sharp tip. The arrowhead design allows for base coating surfaces with ease using the wide side of the brush, and making insanely thin lines and painting details with the thin side of the brush. Their 00 arrow is the perfect brush for painting eyes! If you’re looking to splurge on a high quality brushes, look no further than these.

Rosemary and Co. - Series 33 Sables

Reasonably priced, excellent quality, and they feel great in hand. The Series 33 brushes are probably my second most used brushes this past year. They do everything you would want from a quality sable brush, and don’t break the bank. I’ve received mine from Fenris Workshop, a truly fantastic hobby store, located in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Check them out below to see all of the amazing hobby supplies they have.

Paints

If there is one thing I have too many of, other than unpainted models, it is paints… hundreds of paints from many different companies including Games Workshop, Vallejo, Monument Hobbies and Kimera Kolors to name a few. Rather than inundate you with ALL the paints I use; I think if would be best to provide you with some sets or brands that I would recommend.

Monument Hobbies

Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl range of paints is great. In fact, they are my go-to paints for most painting projects. They have different sets available, or you can mix and match to create sets out of the paints you want or need. Check out the link to save a little bit on your purchase.

Kimera Kolors

Kimera makes some amazing paints; however, these are usually single pigment paints and require mixing on your part to get the tones you want to work with. The quality and vibrancy of these paints is outstanding, as is the wait time to get them! In addition to their pure pigment range, they also have a number of different mixed-pigment sets available now. If you’re purchasing Kimera paints, I would STRONGLY recommend picking up a vortex mixer!

Ionic Smart Colors

A new addition to my painting arsenal - the Ionic Smart Color range from Ammo/Mig is really nice to work with. Each paint I’ve used has the same consistency out of the bottle. The paints are thick and creamy in consistency, and easy to thin out. They have a really good range of colors to choose from, and their sets have an awesome variety of colours to get started with.

AK Interactive 3rd Gen

I REALLY enjoy painting with the 3rd gen paints from AK. Unlike the Ionic range, listed above, the AK paints are much thinner in consistency and can be used straight out of the bottle, with a moist brush. They have a couple of my favourite paints as well (Tenebrous Grey and Vampiric Flesh). If you’re looking for a first set of paints, you can’t go wrong with AK 3rd gen.

Airbrushes

Beginner Airbrushes

My first airbrush was this beginner friendly airbrush kit from Amazon. When considering buying an airbrush I would highly recommend getting a compressor with a tank already attached, unless you like the sound of a compressor… A tank will hold air so you can airbrush without the annoying sound all the time, and the price difference vs just a compressor is only a few dollars. The Timbertech airbrush kit I use comes with a beginner friendly airbrush, with a .4 needle, that you can use for priming models, laying down base coats and applying OSL effects. The airbrush is also easy to disassemble and clean.

Advanced Airbrushes

Gaahleri - Mobius 0.2mm

This airbrush has some seriously advanced features at a VERY reasonable price. The 0.2 needle is great for base coating and detail work. The pressure adjustment knob is a game changer when airbrushing. This airbrush can be used to paint up an entire model.

Harder and Steenbeck - Kyiv Infinity

The H&S Infinity is the Ferrari of airbrushes. The quality of the Infinity is second-to-none. From quality of components to ease of care, you can’t get better than the Infinity line of airbrushes. I have the Kyiv edition, but their new Infinity CR+ is the one I would purchase, if I was going to get a new airbrush.

Palettes

Whenever I paint, I always use a wet palette. I have 2 wet palettes: one that stays at my painting desk and one that I use when painting on-the-go or in different parts of our house.

My palette when on-the-go is the Red Grass Games Everlasting Wet Palette. This palette is smaller in size, but more than good enough for most painting sessions.

Painter v2 Wet Palette - Redgrasscreative

My palette when I’m at my desk is the Red Grass Games Everlasting Wet Palette: Studio XL2. This palette is essentially the same as the smaller one, but as stated in the name, is much larger. As someone who mixes a lot of paint, having the larger sized palette is a must-have for me.

  2. The Army Painter Wet Palette - most game stores locally would likely carry this

Misc. Painting Tools

Vortex Mixer

This vortex mixer is a must have if you have more than 10 paints. Being hands-off is a huge benefit compared to those where you need to press the paint bottle against the mixer (which is tough on your hands and less productive when painting.

Effects Paints

  • Dirty Down Effects Paints - these paints are talent in a bottle and I love to use these on grimdark models

  • Villainy Inks - similar to the Dirty Down effects paints, but more designed for the grimdark style. There are numerous tones and generally use a reductive method to apply them on your models.

Basing Materials

  • Krautcover Scenics - these products are fantastic for easy basing, and there are so many different textures to choose from!

  • Huge Minis - Huge has a fantastic selection of basing materials and paints. Their basing textures, flowers, and pigment powders are my go-to when basing.
